What are the beds made of?
We build our garden beds of unstained, untreated redwood. The pigments in redwood naturally deter pests like termites, and also slow down the process of rot. The bright tones of the wood also add a nice touch of color to a garden, and even though the color fades over time, we sand the wood to make it simpler if you choose to stain, seal, or paint the beds to match your outdoor living area.
What soil is included in the bed?
The soil we use in our personal gardens, as well as the gardens we install for private backyards and schools, fills the garden bed from bottom to top. We start with an OMRI and CDFA certified organic potting soil and mix in Happy Frog Soil Conditioner. The garden is full of nutrients such as worm castings, bat guano, composted chicken manure, granite dust, kelp meal, humid acid, as well as multiple strains of mycorrhizal fungi and beneficial bacteria.
Help us keep plastic bags out of the landfill! At no added cost, you can choose to have the interior of your bed lined with leftover soil bags. This helps us recycle, and also adds an additional level of protection to the wood against moisture.
What sizes are available?
Our standard sized beds are are 3 feet wide by 6 feet long and 14 inches deep, ensuring your root vegetables and tomato plants have room to establish a healthy root system. Our most popular size raised bed is 24 inches tall, which our customers have found put less stress on their backs and keep critters (like dogs, a garden's cutest pest!) from getting in. We are happy to customize the size of these beds to meet your personal needs, whether that means making them taller, shorter, bigger, or smaller.
